After the Middle Ages, Salem experienced a second period of prosperity in the Baroque period. At this time the magnificent interiors of the baroque building such as the Kaisersaal, Library and Abtsalon were created.

In January 1802 Salem passed into the possession of the Earl of Baden, was a palace until 2009 and is now administered by the state of Baden-Württemberg. Since the end of the 13th century vineyards have been one of the main activities of the Salem monks.

Zeppelin museum and dornier museum – a great place for aviation fans

The Dornier museum is located directly at Friedrichshafen Airport and takes you on a journey through 100 years of aerospace history! Huge flying boats, nostalgic passenger planes and exciting exhibits from space travel make a visit to the Dornier museum an experience for the whole family. The history of the aviation pioneer Dornier can be traced very well. With more than 400 exhibits, many aviation fans will get their money’s worth in the museum.

A visit to the Zeppelin museum is also a must in Friedrichshafen. One of the largest and most important collections on the subject of zeppelins. Numerous original objects can be seen – uniforms, technical rarities, cutlery, furniture and much more. Video films about the Zeppelin can be viewed. Right down to details about the crash of the Hindenburg. The Zeppelin museum, located directly at the harbour, has become a magnet for the public. From the landing stage of the catamaran it is only a few steps on foot to stand in front of the building. Here you can learn everything about the beginning of airship and even look into the cabins of a zeppelin.

As a pilot, I am also a fan of the regional airport. There are only a few regional airports that offer such a high standard of safety on the one hand, but at the same time have remained easily accessible and kept the atmosphere of a regional airport.

Friedrichshafen is very easy to reach by car, bicycle, train or bus and even by plane.

The island of Reichenau is just two kilometres away from the northern shore of Lake Constance’s Untersee. The 4.5 km long and maximum 1.5 km wide Reichenau is not only the largest island in terms of area, but with around 3,300 inhabitants also the most populous island in Lake Constance. The numerous fields still bear witness today to agricultural cultivation of the “rich Au”.

Reichenau island – church island

Among the most beautiful points of interest of the island are the churches and monasteries, including the cathedral St. Maria and Jacob which is a Catholic parish church and former monastery church of the Benedictine abbey Reichenau. In addition the church St. George and the church St. Peter and Paul as well as many others. The island is therefore also called Klosterinsel (church island). Since 2000, the Reichenau monastery has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

How to get to Reichenau ?

If you want to visit the island, you do not necessarily have to take a boat over from the mainland. Since 1838, the approximately 20 m wide island dam, lined with rows of poplars, has connected Reichenau, today with a motorway, footpath and cycle path, the mainland with the island.

Other acitivities 

The Reichenau island is a great destination for family trips. Cycling trips are as much a part of the possible activities as swimming and diving. The museum of of Reichenau is located in the “old town hall” in the centre of the island.
The building was built around 1200, the half-timbered building was built around the 15th century. It is one of the oldest half-timbered houses in southern Germany. With a canoe, one can drive around the whole island or down the Rhine in the direction of Konstanz. Sport and playgrounds offer many other possibilities to enjoy their holidays for children on the island of Reichenau.

The city owes its baroque silhouette to the Prince Bishops of Constance. They built magnificent palace complexes. Around these representative buildings are the small alleys, the beautiful squares and the magnificent panoramic terraces of Meersburg. In summer, cozy cafés and the terraces of the castle and palace offer beautiful views of the lake from above and  the imposing Alps.

Meersburg Germany – Relax with style

The bathing and sauna world of the “Meersburger Therme” is a great tip for bad weather or if you just want to relax for a while. It combines bathing experience and and overwhelming panoramic view over Bodensee Germany.

Since 2016, the “vineum bodensee” – House for Wine, Culture and History – offers  interactive and sensuous tours. This state-of-the-art wine museum invites visitors to join in and try out, and conveys interesting facts and curiosities about the subject of wine.

Island Mainau – a relaxing half-day in the midst of blooming nature

The island Mainau is the third largest of the islands in Bodensee Germany and covers more than 45 hectares. It can be reached from the south shore via a bridge. The next bigger city is Konstanz. The island belongs to the Litzelstetten-Mainau district of the city of Constance and is owned by a count’s family, which is still an important part of the Mainau attraction today.

It is a nice destination for a half-day tour.  However, you should be prepared for many other tourists who come to the island in spring and summer.

Lindau Germany weather and sightseeing

Whatever the weather, anyone interested in culture and good food will always feel at home in Lindau.

The island is one of the most beautiful places on Lake Constance with many beautiful spots and historical sights. In addition to the harbour entrance, Lindau’s main railway station, the Gothic town hall and the cathedral are among the most famous attractions.

If you want to explore the island and Lake Constance by boat, you can rent motor boats without a licence. You can also rent pedal boats or rowing boats. In the Bodensee Yachtschule Lindau day trips or sunset trips on large sailing yachts are offered.

The nearest airport, friedrichshafen, is about half an hour away. Various airlines land in Friedrichshafen, and the Lufthansa also flies to Friedrichshafen with a flight from Frankfurt.

The capital of the Black Forest has a lot to offer – whether you’re taking a stroll through the historic old town, getting excited about the city’s culture and history, staying in one of the many cafés and cosy pubs or indulging in the cuisine and hospitality. Freiburg is the southernmost city in Germany and is located in the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

Freiburg Germany – scenic city flair

The landmarks of the city are the Freiburger Münster and the Freiburger Bächle. The tower of the Freiburg Cathedral is sometimes called the most beautiful tower of Christendom.

The water channels of Freiburg, the so-called Bächle, supplied the city with drinking water in the 12th century and prevented fires. Today the “Bächle” are a pleasure for young and old, who cool their feet in summer or organize a small boat race. According to legend, if you accidentally put a foot in the water, you have to marry a local!

Freiburg im Breisgau is the ideal size. It is big enough to offer a variety of activities and small enough to get around quickly.

The city can easily be reached by car in about 2-3 hours or by a little plane within 45 minutes from Friedrichshafen. The airport is centrally located, a taxi will take you to the heart of the city within 10 minutes.

Constance Germany weather – beautiful at any time of the year

The town, which was named after the Roman Emperor Flavius Valerius Constantius Chlorus (305/306) presents itself as a particularly cosmopolitan city. Due to the university, Constanz is a lively and young city. Although the neighbouring Swiss town of Kreuzlingen has grown very close to Constance on the one hand, a border fence separates the two towns from each other on the other.

Konstanz is a rather cozy place. Students live in the districts of Fürstenberg and Wollmatingen north of the Rhine. They are close to the campus and yet close to the city centre. Within the city, you can quickly get around on foot. For the way to the university you better buy a used bicycle.

At the “Strandbar” on the Rhine you can relax or meet friends at any time of the day. If there’s no room in the deckchair, just have a drink and sit on the shore. Near the harbour, “Steg 4” or the kiosk at the Stadtgarten are worthwhile.

In the old town “Pano” offers very tasty ice cream, coffee and snacks. The “Café Zeitlos” is a popular meeting place for students. A cosy and original café for lunch is “Das Voglhaus” in the old town. Next door there is also a small shop.

In the evening you sit in the “Seekuh” very nicely in the beer garden. Cheap cocktails are to be found in “Die schwarze Katz”. There are clubs for dancing only in the industrial area. In the “Kantine” and in the “Kula” sometimes concerts are played.

You simply have to see constance when you visit Bodensee-Germany.
